Amongst by books, there are several that have been waiting for quite some time to be read. There are one or two I have started, but did not make much progress with.

But Brian Greene's Fabric of the Cosmos was among those I did not really look forward to in the first place. By now, I have finished it, and I have to admit there was no reason to hesitate all the time.

In his book, Greene tackles the question of what time and space really are -- are they things, a something; or are they only a mathematical construct that enables us to talk about the relationship between things (whether they are subatomic particles whole galaxies)? This is not a philosopical treatise (for the most part), but quite down-to-earth physics. The author is very successful at relating this physics: the book is quite accessible to non-experts, without being shallow; physicists may be able to learn something new as well.

Starting with classical mechanics' notion of space and time, Greene explains relativistic spacetime and proceeds to string and M-theory, teasing out along the way how physics treats the texture of reality. I was surprised to learn that for instance the origin of the arrow of time[1] is much more complex than I had thought: the second law of thermodynamics is not sufficient to explain it.

In looking at the different theories, the author is also delineating a history of physics  -- much like Singh did for mathematics. This history, in turn, is very well suited to get an overview of physics.

Almost all physical laws are symmetric with respect to past and future, so that phenomena may take place forward as well as backwards. Nevertheless, we can easily tell whether any of a number of macroscopic phenomena is running in reverse: a glass may break, but shards to not spontaneously combine to form a glass; we remember the past, but not the future.

Der kleine Schnitzer ist Schroeders Roman aber nicht abträglich.

Auf Telepolis ist ein Interview mit John Petersen abgedruckt wiedergegeben. Das Original ist in What is Enlightenment erschienen.
Petersen äußert sich dazu, wie er sich die Energieversorgung nach dem Ende der Rohölförderung vorstellt.
Das ganze ist zwar gruselig übersetzt — ein Futurist beschäftigt sich mit Futurismus, Petersen ist wohl eher Futurologe — aber ganz interessant zu lesen. In der Zukunft, die in dem Interview beschrieben wird, wird Energie aus Äthylalkohol erzeugt, der durch Gärung aus Pflanzen entsteht. Da diese nachwachsen und dabei Kohlendioxid aus der Atmosphäre binden, wären zwei wesentliche Probleme, die die Verwendung von fossilen Energieträgern mit sich bringt, gelöst.

Der letzte Teil wirkt allerdings eher komisch: Da ist von Nullpunktenergie die Rede, aber man hat das Gefühl, daß Petersen nicht wirklich weiß, was es damit auf sich hat. Dann geht es um die kalte Fusion, mit der der zweite Hautsatz der Thermodynamik ausgehebelt werden soll. Die Ausführungen hören dazu sich für mich verdächtig nach Freier Energie an — außerdem habe ich das Gefühl, daß Petersen auch den zweiten Hauptsatz nicht wirklich kennt, denn das, was er da beschreibt, scheint sich auf den ersten Hauptsatz zu beziehen.

Leider steuert Telepolis nur einen kurzen Absatz zu dem Interview bei, der diese seltsamen Aussagen wiederholt und bei der Gelegenheit auch noch von latenter Energie spricht — das ist für meinen Geschmack sprachlich zu nah an latenter Wärme, hat aber ansonsten nichts damit zu tun. Das gleiche Problem hat man auch mit dem Begriff der Freien Energie, wie ihn Pseudowissenschaftler verwenden; denn auch die freie Energie gibt es in der Thermodynamik, allerdings mit gänzlich anderen Eigenschaften.
Ich hätte es nett gefunden, wenn Telepolis sich mit den Aussagen Petersens kritisch auseinandergesetzt hätte. Auch wenn das nicht der Fall ist, haben doch zumindest einige der Kommentarschreiber im Artikelforum ihren Spaß.
